Besides pulp and paper production, Sappi also started up a new business in Nanocellulose, by establishing a nanocellulose competence center (NCC) in Maastricht, including a pilot plant for the production of micro and nano fibrils at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen, the Netherlands.

At the Research & Development department of Sappi Europe (based in Maastricht), we now have the following vacancy, based at the Campus inGeleen:
Manager Pilot Plant for Nanocellulose (fulltime)
The main purpose of this function is to secure smooth and efficient running of the pilot plant for developing Cellulose Nano Fibrils (CNF). The technology for CNF, as developed by Sappi, has entered scaling-up phase, now requiring optimization of the process towards lowest possible Capex and Opex at a given quality level.
Main tasks for this position include:
delivering, accommodating, and contributing to innovation by tightly aligning with the R&D-teams and Marketing Team (securing that the operations of the pilot plant is absolutely in line and according to (local) safety regulations,
development and implementation of effective and efficient analytical tools and equipment to be used in research, development, and testing, direct continuous improvement initiatives, installing standard operating procedures for production and analysis of selected grades, leading all activities on the plant, from all aspects of manufacturing operations to the planning of runs, facility maintenance, managing the site in line with legislation, planning permissions, mastering EHSS regulation, manuals, and documents related to the plant, oversee all aspects of the plant quality systems and ensure that adequate stocks of raw materials are maintained.
The manager pilot plant will be the first point of contact for all site queries from internal and external stakeholders, reporting directly to the manager of the Nanocellulose Competence Center.
Integration of all R&D and Sappi technological disciplines on product and process technological issues in order to secure optimized CNF technology for low cost and high quality CNF is, amongst others, in his/her responsibility. An active role in the NCC team to find innovative solutions for complex issues is required.
The pilot plant is located at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen, the Netherlands
Academic level of working /thinking, a MsC degree in chemical engineering, physics or materials science is preferable
High responsibility and focus on health, safety and environment
Must have a strong technical/operational background with affinity towards scientific development
Proven track-record in operational management skills, bridging complex research activities in an industrial environment, with a proven ability to manage operational teams
Results driven and focused on speed and quality of the output
Expertise in project management (reporting, organization, planning, budget control)
Professional command of English at least at the B1 level of the Common European Framework of reference for languages
Effective communication skills and good sense for political savvy
High level of engagement into identifying new technological opportunities and building Value-based relationships
Excellent team player, able to take ownership of tasks given and clearly showing entrepreneurial spirit, able to stimulate the operational team at the plant
