Serco`s Prisoner Escort and Custody Services (PECS) makes a critical contribution to the Criminal Justice System, transporting detained people, from prisons and police stations and ensuring they are managed safely, securely and with dignity during their time at Court.
The salary for this role is £17,627.10- £20,788.62.
Overview of the Role
As a Prisoner Custody Officer you will be responsible for the Management of detained people as they are being transported between various custodial establishments and any movements during their court appearance.
You will liaise with court officials, solicitors and be trusted to ensure that prisoners are treated with respect and dignity. Your actions can make a really positive difference to a detained person and the smooth running of the Court system.
This valuable role can go from one extreme to another, it can be fast paced requiring energy and the ability to sustain performance under pressure to the ability to maintain composure and remain alert whilst accompanying prisoners during their trial.
Due to the nature of the environment keen instincts, strong powers of observation, decision making skills and the ability to be assertive and exercise authority are important. These skills together with your natural patience, understanding and commitment to helping people will stand you in good stead for this position.
Successful candidates will be able to evidence experience of dealing with members of the public in sometimes pressurised, challenging and or demanding situations, or have experience as a supervisor or team leader. You will be a team player who is able to demonstrate resilience, integrity and professionalism at all times.
Those officers involved in driving duties must have a full UK Driving Licence, C1 and D1 licence holders can attract an additional allowance.
This role is not based in a prison environment but will involve shift work as the courts operate six days a week from Monday to Saturday, although night working is not a feature of this position there may be occasions when finish times are unpredictable.
This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and all offers of employment are subject to security clearance checks, approval by the Home Office, and satisfactory employment references.
Due to the nature of this role it is important that you have a level of fitness that would allow you to pass and maintain various mandatory training courses including Control and Restraint and First Aid.
You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, to be able to achieve a minimum of Level 2 Key Skills English and Maths (GCSE, NVQ or equivalent).
If you are successful for this role you will be required to attend Initial training which is a 5 week course and 100% attendance during this will be mandatory.
